Are you aware of what your colleagues in the Human Resource Department
(HRD) do? Beyond just handling employee-related issues, did you know
that there is a team handling scholarships and internships in HDB?
EHRM Vetina Lin shares her typical day involved in the HDB Scholarship
and Internship team! Vetina is part of the Employee Communications
Section in HRD that works on the branding, selection and management of
pre-service HDB scholars and undergraduate interns.
Together with the team, Vetina handles the annual scholarship selection
exercise and onboards newly awarded scholars to the HDB Family. She
manages the payment of maintenance allowance, tuition fees and any other
compulsory fees required for scholars to complete their course of study. In
addition, she also seeks Management’s approval for scholars’ requests to
pursue exchange/summer school/Master’s programmes and arrange for
scholars to complete their compulsory vacation attachment with HDB. As a
scholarship officer, she regularly meets scholars on various occasions to
catch-up with them, provide advice/information on scholarship matters and
even promote scholarships to students.
9.00 am
We caught her in action briefing a graduating scholar, who is due to
commence service, on her posting plan!
10.30am
The team also holds a bi-annual Internship Engagement Session for HDB
interns to mingle and get to know more about about HDB's culture, value
and operations. Much preparatory work was needed to host the 82 interns
who attended the session in July 2023. In the late morning, Vetina was
arranging the site visits to BRI’s Centre of Building Research and Punggol
Discovery Cube.
2.00pm
No time for food coma after lunch as it was an afternoon out to
Raffes Institution to share with their students HDB’s scholarship
and internship opportunities. Vetina highlighted a common
misconception amongst students was that HDB was only
interested in students keen to study Architecture. They were
pleasantly surprised to learn that HDB looks out for a diverse
range of disciplines including Civil Engineering, Computer
Science, Business/Data Analytics, Economics and Accountancy
to name a few. Each year, Vetina and her team visits many
schools for such outreach programmes to promote HDB as an
employer of choice to students and parents.
6.00pm
The day ended with a sense of fulfilment – Vetina enjoys her interactions with scholars and students as she helps them to make more informed
career decisions. .
